and what of the crooked Dahr?

Meta
This picks up right as Morgren is trying to explain away the fact that he drew a dagger on Renli and the group is considering where to go next and what to do. The previous post was getting really long with comments so I decided to start another one. Take it away!

Renli picks up the other helmet and drops it in the fire, too. “There! Anyone want it and you can get blisters for it. Tomorrow when they cool I’ll take them and I’ll see that they’re properly disposed of,” the dwarf growls at everyone and no one.

“That scimitar seems okay – Aiomeadyn gives me no reason to dislike it.”

“Things are not always what they seem.” Ezra said as he looked around at their confused faces. “When I was a boy, growing up the Baron’s house, I marveled at the soldiers in his employ. Soldiers deadly with a blade, Wizards of some renown at times, and even some that moved with such catlike reflexes you’d think they were walking on air. One Evening we were holding court after a feast to celebrate a visiting dignitary, another landowner, Baron Verenbain. As a sign of largesse, Baron Tomas… erm, Oh Tosh! Baron Tomas gave Verenbain’s Captain of the Guard a beautiful ring encrusted with a gem and emblazoned with the arms of House Verenbain. It was truly a wondrous item to behold, as I had seen it earlier in the study when I was receiving a tonguelashing. Anway, I was dying to tell someone, so I had sought out Porrus to share my discovery. I remember the calm, patient face, his nose twitching as I regaled him of the ring. His only response was ‘Things are not always what they seem.’ I was 10 years old when this transpired, and it was two years later to the day that Baron Verenbain yielded his lands to the Baron Tomas. It seemed his Captain of the Guard, Friedrich, laid down his sword and ordered his men to stand down.” As he looked around at their faces, and let it sink in. “Porrus told me later, in confidence that the gift had been a cursed Ring of Geas, one that at the proper time was used to bring down another landowner and seize his properties and his men. Verenbain sued for due process, but the courts could not find any evidence to prove there was any wrong-doing just a landowner who could not protect his lands. Verenbain had fallen out of favor with the All Father though, and this is how things work in the old realm.”

“I saw the Iron Fist when I donned tje helmet.” Morgren began. "He said I now work for him. And for the moment I did.
“Now, the use of the helmets are clear, better armor, see in the dark. All strange abilities for us megar humans.
“What if we dispose of the Iron Fist? Would that ability no longer plague the wearer of the helms?
“Like the blade, it is how it is used, not what it is. Those are my thoughts. For good or ill, you have them.”

“Speaking of things not as they seem…gentlemen, when we place this evidence in our Dhar’s lap, he will have no choice but to bring in higher authorities. This may require us to testify of all we’ve seen. How would Elven authorities feel about our magical capabilities? Considering their distrust of Mischlings, as well as the other ‘lessers’, what might be their response? Have we need to be concerned?”

Heading Home

I don’t think we should dump it in our Dahrs lap. There are avenues we can send them to the higher burocracy. If we do, the elves will tear apart his leadership. He doesn’t need that, nor does he deserve it. He looks the other way when it is just and right, and doesn’t blindly follow the stupid elves edicts blindly. No, he is good to the people he serves. Send it by currier to the central security of (capital city name) and justice will be swift.
No one need know of Ezra’s pact. Or your friend from… Beyond? Or our sight for that matter.
But technically, our sight is not really illegal. It is as if a spell has been cast upon us, no worse than Renli healing us. They may however want to study it so… No one beyond us gets to know.

Renli steps into the circle and puffs out his chest.

“A evil thing is evil – no taking that away. A sword without fell magic isn’t good or evil, but a helm imbued with evil is just that! We destroy those things together or I do it myself,” he says, folding his arms and broadcasting a demeanor that states with no uncertainty that this dwarf will not be move in his view.

Then get rid of them Renli. I’m tired of talking about it. Ancestors above! Give me strength. Oh they’re evil. You ride in the rear wagon with your dammed helmets.

“Master dwarf, we have not but a blacksmiths fire in Renlen. How do we dispose of such things out here on the frontier?” Kit askes in genuine curiosity.

Heading Home

Renli pauses to consider Kit’s entirely valid question.

“Hadn’t thought of that. Good point. I’ll keep them under wraps and we’ll see if the smith in Renlen can do something about them.”

You’re all 4th level now, as you know. Please let me know what class you took for 4th, and whether you took the stat boost or a feat, if you’re eligible for either (remember: you only get those when you hit 4th level in a single class, not 4th overall…by my count that means only Kit and Renli would be eligible for that, since they’re the only two who’ve not multi-classed).

Morgren begins. "Listen. I’m still for keeping the damn helmets. There is one aspect of them that is bad and that is the connection they give to this Iron Fist. We have already seen he can take a hit from what you’ve said Kit. Arrow in his side.
“So it’s pretty easy, kill the limp fist, and we have 2 perfectly good powerfully magical helmets at our disposal.
“Why is this so bloody hard to understand?”

“If Morgren wants to wear the helmet, I think we should let him. I mean, my contract was unwilling, but who am I to judge. Give it a whirl Morg!” Ezra looks around at the confused expressions of his companions “What?? He seems determined, let him exercise his freewill!”

Heading Home

Renli spits out a mouthful of mead he was guzzling and coughs.

“No, he will not ‘give it a whirl,’ dammit!” he barks. Both helmets are in the fire now, and Renli looks around for more combustable materials to stoke the thing. “It’s cold in here and I want to make a point!” he grumbles, adding more wood to the pit.

“You see? That leather’s not burning – nor smoking, nor even turning a color!” he says as he pushes one of the helms around with a poker.

“Magic! We know the things have magic woven into them, and I know that magic’s of an evil sort. If our human wants to don one of them he can do so while they’re nice and warm.”

“And just to make a point, Morgren, why not pray with me for a bit? Come, let me offer Aiomaedyn’s blessing to you…” he says as he approaches the human, his holy symbol held in front of him.

Heading Home

“Renli, you know I don’t follow Aiomaedyn. My ancestors call to me, not the ‘All Father’. I do not begrudge you your beliefs, and accept the healing and martial prowess you he gives you. But falling on my knees to him and giving myself over is not in me. He has some teachings I can respect but others I don’t.

I mean it when I say get rid of the helmets, but I also see possibilities with them. I know through them the Iron Fist exerts control over those who wear them, but I also wonder what would happen if he were to be destroyed. It’s like an army without command and control. (going back to his military roots) Less effective, but still worthy of note."

He looks off to the distance and continues to himself as much as to anyone else who is listening. He seems crest fallen.
“Can they not be used as the tools they are, and not a puppet for him? Or is the magic tied to him? I am no arcanist. Is that how magic works? Perpetually tied to those who create it? Or is there another device that enables the link to happen? If one is destroyed, does that destroy the other? Maybe like a key with restraints. If the key is lost, the restraints still restrain those they’re put on.”

Morgren continues to explore larger understandings of the world and breaking out of his smaller understanding of how magic works.

“Before it was just Elves who had mastery of magic, and to a lesser extent the dwarves. The helmets and blade show no markings of either. Then who created them? Is the fist an elf? Or a demon? Who else has control of magic? Dragons? We heard of the Black that was destroyed a few months ago by the Elf Magistrate. I don’t remember hearing about magic it may have used.

“Then again, who created the grove to enable us the ability to see and understand magic? ……….”
Morgren continues to pack the wagons. All can see his attempts to make everything perfect as he falls back on his military training to ‘square things away’ and also tries to expand his little understanding of how magic works in the world to himself and any who care to listen.

The wagons ties get a little tighter, and the bundles of wares get adjusted to make the most efficient room.

After the wagons are loaded, we give the cave a once-over with our eyes and Kit detects magic in case anything is tucked away and we missed it.
Then we head back to Renlen with it all in tow: horses, helmets and all.

“Morgren, teach us one of those trudging songs the military uses to pass the miles.” Kit continues, “I heard a couple when they used to pass through my hometown. I always liked that one about that ‘bawdy wench.’ How does it go?”

Are you folks intending on leaving that same night, or waiting until morning? It’s below freezing outside, and the entire episode with the helmet and the fire and whatnot took place on the night after fight with the RBBs.

Heading Home

I was assuming this all happened the following day.

Heading Home

Here’s how I see it breaking down: The episode with the helmet happened that night, along with the arguments, discussion, and tentative agreements. The bundling of stuff took place in the cave that night, and final packing of the wagons the next morning, and then you all headed off toward Renlen.

The caravan consists of:

  • 3 wagons
  • 8 horses from the RBBs
  • Your own 3 horses + 1 pony
  • About 2 wagons-worth of supplies in barrels and boxes, to include some salted meat, tools, and other basic material and food staples.
  • Maerith the Mystery Girl – is she a victim? A skank? A little of both, or something else entirely?
  • The personal gear of the RBBs.
  • 650GP in various current-issue coin
  • 500GP worth of various gems

When the wagons are in their way, Morgren begins the song Ring Dang Do.
Not as bawdy as one might want but a traveling song none the less.

As Morgren has the skill Land Vehicles I would think he would be in the lead wagon to get them through the toughest parts of the animal trails but trying to get to the road as quickly as possible. He is anxious to put that box canyon behind him.
Through the travels though, he perpetually keeps one eye up for a flying black horse.
He is itching to get revenge. In his mind, the control The Iron Fist is equating to the same control the elves have on his people.
The embers are beginning to grow in the pit of his stomach.

Does anyone else have Land Vehicles training?

I would assume we’d know basics about wagons, but not like the wagon master.

“Well done, Morgren. By the way, where is this Ring Dang Do?” Kit asks after he laughs and claps heartily.

I was looking for an actual cadence Ring Dang Do I learned when I was in basic training… My Drill Instructor could have been put on an artical 15 if higher ups had heard it. It was all about doing naughty things… Basically, a ring dang do was a hoochie for the military. ; )
“Ring Dang Do was our bivuak location at ft. leinholer. We just went through it but in the center is a very tall flattened mountain. It would freeze in the winter, and scorch in the summer. Climbing up was the ‘fun’. "
Everyone can see his is still having a hard time, but when he is reminded of his military training, his emotions are lessened and the air of officer comes out especially when leading the wagon train.
“Pull the reigns to the left. Stay in the ruts I made. Like this! Wooooh! Move along boys! Thats it! Get some!”

I only asked about the wagon skill because it’d make things go faster. You guys can manage, however, on overland travel with the wagons although it’s going to take some extra days going over the rough trails before you get to the main road. You’ll make it to Renlen in 5 or 6 days.

And Thom will start with INS.

Final question before a new post: the plan is to head back to Renlen, turn over as much of the stolen goods as possible to responsible authorities, figure out how to get Maerith back to Indoschan, and do something about the crooked Dahr, right? Confirm that, or amend it, and I’ll write another post to move things forward some.

I was under the impression we got to keep what we hauled out, hence lugging around the suits of armor. Is this different now? Not being greedy, but clarifying.
We should keep the weapons, armor, money, chick (to return to uncle), horses etc. and turn over the wagons and supplies.
What say we gents?

Heading Home

Kit’s letter of marque explicitly states that you can keep the spoils, which is defined as the personal possessions of the criminals. The wagons and supplies are all stolen or traded for with stolen goods – that’s actually accounted for in Een’s ledger. The horses are anyone’s guess.

So…you can keep the coin, gems, personal gear of the RBBs, and their horses (8 of them). The horses you’re riding are borrowed, and are of comparable quality to those that the RBBs had.

Heading Home

Riding horses will be pulling wagons?
Other than that… Good recount of future plan

Heading Home

Yes, keep the spoils, and turn in what we need to.

Heading Home

I’m not going to divide horses into separate categories. You’ve got a total of 11 horses and a furry pony. Eight of those horses were outfitted to pull wagons; three are yours, for riding; and the pony has been Renli’s mount.

So off to Renlen you go! Another post will address that.
